A few helpful hints and information for clients who seek a transcription service

We largely transcribe digital audio files - from letters to larger documents, interviews and meetings. We also transcribe analogue standard size cassette tapes, as well as micro-cassettes.

The length of time a typist takes to transcribe a file will depend on quite a few factors. These include background noise, coughing, muffled speech, more than one person speaking at a time and whether we are required to identify the speakers. If the quality of the audio is not good, clients will need to allow for extra time for the typist to rewind and check unclear words, as well as the final revision of the completed document.
  • Clear, dedicated dictation at a slow speed - may take 2-3 hours typing per audio hour
  • Clear, dedicated dictation in normal speech - may take 3-4 hours typing per audio hour
  • Forum discussion - several voices, speaking one at a time - may take 5-6 hours typing per audio hour
  • Forum discussion - several voices, with interference - may take 5-6 hours typing per audio hour
Turnaround Times

Our standard turnaround is 3 business days. We are able to provide a 24 hour service, if the audio is of less than 1 hour duration - note that a surcharge of 25% applies to our 24 hour service.

The usual 3 day turnaround may not apply if your audio file meets the following criteria:

  • If the audio file is of less than reasonable quality
  • If there are more than two participants
  • If the content is technical or there is industry-specific jargon within the audio
  • If there are strong accents
  • If there is a more than usual amount of background noise
The above factors will increase the time it takes the typist to transcribe the files, hence the need for a longer turnaround time. In cases such as these, we will offer a 4 - 5 business day turnaround service. Again, this depends on the duration of the audio file.
